Known details about the sale of Planetside IP

Enad Global 7 released a quarterly report, noting that they sold a “non-core” IP for $5.9 million.

The same report didn’t mention Planetside in any of the earnings notes, which drew fans to conclude this was the IP in question, although nothing was official yet.

More recently, fans figured out that the IP was sold to a shell company named “Bay Tree Tower Limited”.

Why Planetside IP was sold

There is no official statement about why Enad Global 7 considered Planetside a non-core IP but corporate shot callers are not exactly known for their nuance about fan bases nor do they care about a group’s feelings unless they translate directly into big bucks. As such, the best guess is that they simply saw the revnue numbers and made the call.

Among the games under EG7’s roof, for the past few years Planetside was in the bottom tier when it comes to revenue, alongside EverQuest 2 and D&D Online.

Anything related to D&D is currently in the spotlight thanks to Baldur’s Gate 3’s massive success while EQ2 is in the same IP as the first game, which is the company’s biggest money maker after DC Universe Online. Planetside had no saving grace, especially after huge revenue drop in 2023.

Why Planetside 2 revenue plummeted in 2023

In 2023, Planetside 2 was already 11 years old and since 2015, the game was closely tied to Wrel, a YouTuber-turned-game dev that was employed by Daybreak and later became the lead designer for this particular title.

Depending on who you ask, he could be the worst thing to happen to Planetside 2 because he nerfed a faction to the ground, and whichever faction the feedback is coming from is the one that was ruined by Wrel. The other part of the community swears that if it weren’t for Wrel, the game would have died and been shut down long ago.

It would appear that the latter part of the community was right as Planetside 2’s revenue had a massive drop in 2023, the same year Wrel left Daybreak.

Other than the game’s age and possible other behind the scenes issues we may not be aware of yet, it is quite clear he had a huge impact on keeping Planetside 2 alive and this is currently the most plausible theory about the drop in interest for the game.

What’s next for Planetside 2

At this point, there is only speculation about what is next for Planetside 2. Using a shell company for an acquisition is not a strange thing to do for a bigger corporation. There is a theory that Amazon is the actual buyer but without official news or plausible trail leading back to them, it is impossible to be certain.

As for the new company’s plans for the game, it could range from squeezing it dry in an attempt to get a quick flip to revitalizing Planetside 2.
