Intro

Solasta: Crown of the Magister is a really good video game adaptation of D&D tabletop rules even to this day but with Baldur’s Gate 3 existing, the comparisons were inevitable. Since Solasta’s character models were less than great on their own, the pressure to come closer or meet the new standards was high.

Solasta 2 is here to deliver.

New character models

While the essence of a D&D adventure is to have a good time with a party of friends that go up against a new threat, video game adaptations are also RPGs, meaning immersion is an important fact which means character model quality is crucial. In the first Solasta, characters looked like they were made of playdough but since the camera was zoomed out and isometric most of the time, we could look past it.

However, Tactical Adventures decided to improve this part of their game for the sequel to make it that much more enjoyable. With a new engine, the devs were able to improve character models massively. The image below speaks volumes.

Massive improvements aren’t new for Tactical Adventures

Solasta devs have a habit of making incredible improvements in what would be considered a really short time period with giant corporations that own AAA game studios.

Within 2 years between base game release and the Palace of Ice DLC launch, the devs implemented high-level gameplay and visual effects for the new spells that looked completely different in comparison to the basic appearance of vanilla VFX.

As a side note, Larian Studios chose not to go over level 12 due to concerns regarding the power of the new abilities but that didn’t stop Tactical Adventures who implemented character levelling up to 16 for Palace of Ice.

Overall, it’s great to feel optimistic about something and Solasta 2 gave me multiple reasons to feel that way. Remember to check out the additional screenshots of the new character models.
