Intro

Exodus is an upcoming Sci-Fi RPG from people that were in BioWare before it went creatively bankrupt. New teams comprised of such veterans from other studios have raised hype previously, some used it well and others failed to deliver.

In the case of Exodus, things seem rather bright and there are good reasons for cautious optimism, such as the intriguing concepts that were mentioned in Archetype Entertainment’s most recent dev diary.

Time dilation

Since the game will have players travelling between star systems, it is going to feature time dilation. One might think of Mass Effect and ask why such a thing would be necessary. The answer is likely that there is no hyper advanced race of machines with convoluted and nonsensical motives in the universe of Exodus to misplace technology that allows us to overcome that hurdle without explanation.

In any case, messing with the speed of light will cause time for the player to run slower than it would for people on their home planet. As such, returning from missions will result in NPCs growing older by a years or decades when we next see them.

Player’s actions change the home planet

Leaving loved ones behind to grow old without you is not something people would usually do without an extremely compelling reason. The reasons in this case are pieces of technology that allow humanity to grow quicker technologically, so it is a bit like Mass Effect in that aspect.

When players come back from their travels and turn these artifacts in, the planet’s population will start working on integration of the tech and the next time we go away for a few decades, it might transform dramatically to what we saw after docking the last time around.

Other space inhabitants

In case you didn’t follow the story of Exodus, it is set in a future where some humans have already been sent to colonize the Centauri cluster. Some ships arrived as scheduled, colonized the place, evolved together, fought one another and some went extinct.

Due to the massive distance between the places in space and the aforementioned time dilation, the contemporary humans arrived in an era where they are now the underdeveloped underdogs. Those who are above us on the food chain are known as Celestials, with the Crown Celestials and Mara Yama sub-groups having been revealed so far.
