Intro
With leaks flying left and right about the future games and post-launch content, it was inevitable something about Mortal Kombat 1 was about to pop up. It is a fighting game, after all, with exciting future characters to be unveiled. Or as it stands now, no characters and no future DLC.
Khaos Reigns was beyond underwhelming
According to a prominent leaker in the Mortal Kombat community, the reason for future DLC getting the axe is Khaos Reigns. The expansion sold so poorly that the higher ups called it quits and Kombat Pack 2 will be the final character drop.
Additionally, one more expansion was planned but that has also been scrapped for the same reason.
NetherRealm Studios are usually known for great storytelling which is quite unusual for fighting games but that quality successfully eluded them with Khaos Reigns. This particular expansion was a snooze fest as far as the story goes and while it brings 6 new kombatants in total, it just didn’t justify the price.
Fighting game pricing problems
Khaos Reigns’ price tag of $50 / €50 struck the nerve with many players but this is an issue fighting games in general suffer from. With full price for the base game at launch and almost full price per DLC character pack, it is easy to see why interest in them fades quicker than in genres where the same or lower amount of money can result in larger content drops.
As it stands, Ghostface, T-1000 and Conan the Barbarian will be the final characters released for MK1.
