Intro

Another day, another disappointment from The Veilguard.

BioWare keep cutting the RPG elements from the upcoming Dragon Age game and now it’s time for one of the systems they were known for in the past 15 years or so. Importing decisions from previous instalments was present in both Dragon Age and Mass Effect series but with The Veilguard it is being minimized.

Only a handful of Inquisition choices matter

In an interview with IGN, John Epler confirmed that Dragon Age: The Veilguard will take into account only three choices made in Inquisition. Dragon Age 2 and Dragon Age: Origins choices will be ignored completely and the reason for it would be comical if not for a severe case of tragic irony.

“We don’t want to ever imply that a decision is the wrong decision or the right decision,” he says. “We might joke about things like, “Oh, you let The Chargers die? Well, that’s clearly the wrong choice.” But again, it’s not because it’s canon. We want those stories to be personal.” ~ John Epler, The Veilguard creative director, via IGN

BioWare wanted the stories of the previous games to be personal so they swept them under the rug.

If you missed it, the great irony here is that nothing felt more personal than the consequences I made with the Hero of Ferelden having influence on what happens in Kirkwall or both Hawke and Hero’s actions being consequential in Inquisition. BioWare now claims they are making it more personal by not acknowledging any of those stories throughout The Veilguard.

List of Inquisition choices that affect The Veilguard

  • Who the Inquisitor romanced
  • Whether the player disbanded the Inquisition
  • Whether the player vowed to stop Solas or save him

That is the grand total of choices that will be carried over to the new Dragon Age. For reference, Dragon Age Origins, a game from 15 years ago, had 18 choices that affected Dragon Age 2.

Dragon Age Inquisition had Dragon Age Keep, an entire website built to import around 300 choices from both previous games into the third instalment.

Magi Circle quest choices in Origins
A single quest (Broken Circle), depicted on the left, in Dragon Age Origins had 3 choices that mattered in Inquisition.
If you drag the slider to the left, you will see how many quests and DLCs had multiple choices that carried over.

In essence, this is just another part of Dragon Age identity that is getting annihilated with The Veilguard. At this point, the game would probably fare better if it were a new IP and didn’t mess with an established universe.
