Intro

BioWare recently published an open letter announcing a name change for the upcoming Dragon Age game which didn’t inspire confidence with the fans. On the other hand, they also announced a gameplay showcase.

Name change

Instead of having “Dreadwolf” as the subtitle, the next Dragon Age will now be called “The Veilguard”.

This move cast a shadow of doubt over the fan base for two reasons. First, the name change happening so late into development suggests there was a lot of turmoil connected to the project, especially because BioWare previously noted the game had been rebooted multiple times so far.

Additionally, this will be the first time “the” was included as a part of the subtitle since the previous games simply had “Origins”, “2” and “Inquisition” which hints at a drastically different creative vision compared to the previous entries or lack of attention to detail.

New Dragon Age game's focus is no longer on the antagonist

Gameplay showcase

BioWare stated they would show gameplay officially for the first time on June 11, 2024.

You can watch it on the official Dragon Age YouTube channel at 08:00 PDT / 11:00 EDT / 17:00 CEST.

While the news of a gameplay showcase is exciting, there are some doubts about that part of the game as well due to the leaked alpha footage where combat looked like a cheap God of War knockoff.

On top of that, it appeared we wouldn’t have full control over the party members which is a significant downgrade from the previous three games. If that weren’t enough, the part size went from player and three AI allies to player and two AI.

Mind you, this was a leaked clip from early alpha. Let’s hope these issues were addressed at least to some extent so we can actually get hyped up about the game after the showcase.
