Intro
Embracer Group’s shopping spree over the past decade keeps biting them and one of the ways to stay afloat is selling all those studios to new owners. The latest case is selling Gearbox Software to Take-Two Interactive where the studio will be integrated in the 2K label.
New Borderlands game in the works
In the same press release, Take-Two Interactive they are working on a new Borderlands game, along with several other projects.
“Gearbox currently has six key interactive entertainment projects in various stages of development, including five sequels, two of which are from the Borderlands and Homeworld franchises, and at least one exciting new intellectual property”
This new intellectual property will also be of great interest for the gaming community but there isn’t any additional info for the moment.
What this means for gamers
Essentially, Gearbox Software will remain the way it is on the development side and the future games will just get published by a different company. Theoretically, this could mean a bigger push for recurring revenue such as microtransactions, season or battle passes but it is all speculation at this point.
If you don’t count Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, Borderlands 3 was the last mainline entry in the series and almost 5 years have passed since its release. We are sure many looter shooter fans are eagerly awaiting the next sequel and currently, there is nothing to suggest the Borderlands DNA will change with the release.
