What is Marvel Rivals?
Marvel rivals is a third-person, 6v6 PvP action game set in the Marvel multiverse. It is highly reminiscent of Overwatch which is one of the reasons why so many people are excited about it. After all, Overwatch 2 has been going down in popularity steadily and Marvel has a rich library of heroes and lore that could fill the void Blizzard’s terrible management created.
If it didn’t strike you as an Overwatch competitor at first, keep in mind that Hulk shares a mechanic similar to D.Va where you get “ejected” out of the powered-up form when you’re at low health. While D.Va leaves her mech and uses a sidearm, Hulk will de-power and turn into Bruce Banner. Additionally, Peni Parker even has design similar to D.Va as both of them are using mechs. We are certain similarities will keep popping up as more of the game becomes known.
One thing that Marvel Rivals has and Overwatch doesn’t is environmental destruction as a gameplay element. While destroying a bike or spinning a blackboard during warmup is fun, destroying a building during combat will probably bring things to the next level.
Marvel Rivals hero roster
During the behind-closed-doors testing, Marvel Rivals featured the following hero roster:
- Bruce Banner / Hulk
- The Punisher
- Storm
- Loki
- Doctor Strange
- Mantis
- Rocket Raccoon
- Black Panther
- Groot
- Magik
- Luna Snow
- Iron Man
- Spider-Man
- Magneto
- Scarlet Witch
- Peni Parker
- Star-Lord
- Namor
Modes in Marvel Rivals
There are reportedly 2 game modes – Escort and King of the Hill. Escort is essentially Payload from Overwatch where one team pushes the cart and the other fights to keep it away from the destination.
Meanwhile, King of the Hill will have players fight for control of a single area where they can earn points by scoring kills while in control.
Platforms and monetization
Even though the game is developed by NetEase, there are rumours it will be available only on PC and console, not mobile which is a platform the company is most well-known for.
On top of that, monetization will supposedly be only cosmetic in nature. This is where we all breathe a sigh of relief since pay-to-win is generally frowned upon in Western markets and for a good reason.
