Intro
Ted Peterson, Julian LeFay and Vijay Lakshman announced in 2019 they were working on a new open world RPG which caused a lot of excitement in the gaming community as these people are often seen as the founders and key figures behind The Elder Scrolls series. The former two are even the namesakes for Sheogorath and Julianos.
Five years later, they announced the project would enter the crowdfunding game.
The Wayward Realms and Kickstarter
Gamers have been suggesting OnceLost Games join Kickstarter for a crowdfunding campaign for a while now and were pleasantly surprised when it was announced the game would indeed go for crowdfunding during Spring 2024. There is no exact start date of the campaign at the moment but you can choose to be notified at launch if you want to stay in the loop or back the project.
What is The Wayward Realms, exactly?
Right now, The Wayward Realms looks exactly like the thing every TES fan has been itching for over the past decade. It is an RPG with a vast world waiting to be explored and countless NPCs that spice it up. In essence, it’s another TES game but in a different universe since Bethesda preferred to release Skyrim 113 times instead of TES 6.
“A Massive World. No, really! Way bigger than most other games you can think of. Big cities with hundreds or thousands of NPCs, deep, dark, dangerous forests, gigantic mountain ranges, sprawling swamps and marshlands, vast oceans, and more, brought to life through dynamic, procedural generation.”
While the description of The Wayward Realms sounds fantastic on paper, there is reason to be cautious about that optimism. The larger the scale of an in-game world, the more it loses depth, which was clearly evident with Starfield recently. It remains to be seen whether OnceLost Games will manage to do something Bethesda failed terribly at.
