It’s the number you get when you add up the sales of FIFA 18 and Grand Theft Auto IV.
CD Project’s third entry into The Witcher game franchise, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, has surpassed the 50,000,000 units sold milestone.
That means at least* half a billion people have stepped into the borrowed boots of one Geralt of Rivia and completed who knows how many contracts and liberated an ungodly amount of settlements throughout the Continent.
CD Project’s entire Witcher trilogy has sold what amounts to a whole Mt. Carbon of copies. The cumulative number reached 75 million units shifted since the original game launched in 2007. To give you some perspective, PUBG: Battlegrounds has moved the same number of copies since 2017.
This news comes out of CD Projekt’s most recent earnings call.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s sales may have been boosted by last year’s release of the next-gen update that added some quality-of-life tweaks, new armors, and a couple of new quests.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt now sits among the top 10 best-selling video games worldwide. The list includes Minecraft in the first place with 238 million copies sold, followed by Grand Theft Auto V at 180 million. Trailing way behind GTA V is EA’s Tetris with an even 100 million units distributed in exchange for some cash.
The bottom of the list is reserved for 2018’s God of War offering which enticed a total of 23 million players.
*Let’s not forget about the dreaded pirates. Ahoy
