He’s Thai, pansexual, and all about that biolight.
Overwatch 2’s Season 4 is about to kick off, and we’re getting a new support hero, as promised.
The news of Lifeweaver’s arrival was leaked in a since-deleted, but still available, PCGamesN article that described the latest hero to join Overwatch 2’s roster as a “Sci-fi druid” and honestly, that sounds spot-on.
Who is Lifeweaver
Also known as Niran Pruksamanee, Lifeweaver is breaking the ice as the first Thai hero to join the fight. Written as pansexual, the new support hero joins an ever-expanding cast of interesting characters adding his burst-healing and choke-blocking abilities to the mix.
Inspiration for the new character
The most significant inspiration for Lifeweaver seems to have been the shape of a mandala, according to the senior character technical artist Chonlawat Thammawan. Lead narrative designer Gavin Jurgens-Fyhrie pointed to Lifeweaver’s warm and personable nature while speaking about what makes him such a great addition to the team.
Lifeweaver’s abilities
Lifeweaver will be wielding a brand new form of light in Overwatch 2. Dubbed “biolight“, his creation has amazing healing and regenerative powers. Fans of Overwatch 2 will recognize that this is a more peaceful use of light in the Overwatch universe: Symmetra’s weapons use “hard-light” to deal damage and set up teleporters, shields, and turrets, which makes sense as both heroes are Vishkar Architect Academy alums.
Petal Platform – Lifeweaver creates a platform that starts ascending when stepped on by players from his team, as well as those from the enemy camp. We haven’t yet seen an ability like this in Overwatch. It vaguely resembles Symmetra’s teleporters (which only work for her team) and maybe the moving platforms on maps such as Volskaya.
Life Grip – Lifeweaver will provide a shield to target-ally and subsequently pull them to his position. The Life Grip ability sounds inspired by Kiriko’s powers to teleport to an ally and grant them temporary immunity – fused into one skill and turned on its head.
Healing Blossom – the primary fire, the belle of the ball, the reason you came. Healing Blossom sits squarely at the center of Lifeweaver’s kit. We still, however, don’t know the specifics of the ability, and how much healing will it provide to the team.
Thorn Volley – Healing Blossom’s prickly sister, and alternate primary fire that deals “a respectable amount” of damage if you should ever find yourself in a less-than-comfortable situation involving an enemy player.
Rejuvenating Dash – not much info on this particular ability, but we do know that it grants some additional passive healing to the team.
Parting Gift – Lifeweaver’s passive does exactly what it says on the tin: sending Lifeweaver back to the spawn room will leave behind a healing item that can be used by either side.
Tree of Life – Ultimate ability: Lifeweaver is able to plop down a tree that heals his allies as long as they are in the perimeter. The tree can also be strategically used to block important chokepoints or mess with a sniper’s sightline.
