Overwatch and its successor have been suffering from a lack of support heroes for a while now.
A recent Overwatch 2 Director’s Take released on Friday 24 March 2023 brought a bunch of news: from the new avenues of communication with the fans and the issues that have been plaguing the Support players for a while, to the competitive mode, and beyond.
Today we’re interested in what the “Reflections on Overwatch 2” and Aaron Keller of Blizzard Entertainment had to say about the Support role.
According to Keller, Overwatch 2 is about to become a more welcoming place for those playing the Support heroes. Apparently, we’re getting some room to breathe as the DPS heroes have been stripped of their speed passive.
Additionally, some of the flanking heroes have also been nerfed a bit. This will, in tandem with the changes coming to the Support heroes, improve the survivability of the healers and give them a chance to do their job as the devs intended.

The changes coming to the Support section of the hero select screen are custom-made buffs. Each Support hero will get their Role Passive buffed, and specific heroes will get bespoke changes to the abilities that make them special.
A couple of shining examples of this are Zenyatta’s kick and Brigitte’s shield buff. Mercy’s Guardian Angel changes are considered a bit of an overcorrection, so we’ll see that dealt with in Season 4.
Also coming in Season 4 is one brand new Support hero, followed by another one in Season 6. Each Overwatch 2 season lasts around three months so we can expect both new Support heroes to join the ranks before this year is out.
Now, we sit and wait for the teasers and shorts for the new heroes.
