Square Enix is pulling the plug on Luminous Productions and absorbing the team after the studio’s “handling” of the most mediocre disaster of the year – Forspoken.

Luminous Productions was in charge of developing and supporting Forspoken but the game was received poorer than anyone, especially Square Enix, could reasonably expect. This is probably the biggest reason that the conglomerate has invited the members of the Luminous team to merge with the rest of the company.

Luminous Productions Twitter account was used to share the generic update message, detailing the upcoming events, and explaining what the merger means for Forspoken.

Luminous Productions’ tweet

The tweet informs the fans that the team will join Square Enix on 1 May 2023, marking the end of Luminous Productions.

Until then, however, they assure us that their main focus will be Forspoken, its patches, and the upcoming DLC.

The previously announced patch will, reportedly, seek to improve the game’s overall performance. An update regarding the update will be arriving shortly, they say.

Forspoken’s DLC, “In Tanta We Trust” is slated for release in the Summer of 2023.

The tweeted announcement ends with a boilerplate block of text in which the team states that all their dreams have come true since they’ve been working on AAA games that incorporate both technology as well as artistry into one.

All that said, Square Enix’s decision to fold in Luminous was expected even sooner as Forspoken had a mess of a launch anyway, thanks in no small part to the fact they didn’t send out review codes for the PC version of the game.

Forspoken currently boasts Mixed reviews on Steam and a 24-hour peak player count of 289.
