CD Projekt Group recently shared their Q3 2022 earnings and a new line of text appeared across the already familiar The Witcher remake banner:

Story-driven, single player open-world RPG – a modern reimagining of 2007’s The Witcher.

This has the fans somewhat worried about the forthcoming remaster of The Witcher, but the quote doesn’t actually give any new details about the rework.

Let’s put our thinking caps on and look at the text one promise at a time:

“Story-driven,” they said: ok, which game set in the Witcher universe wasn’t heavily reliant on the story-telling aspect?

Our hopes for the remake haven’t changed, however, and we still would like to see Geralt’s first steps on his RPG journey more closely tied to what came after the 2007 outing.

“Single player”: well of course, but in this day and age it’s certainly a relief to have these things confirmed.

“Open-world RPG”: The Witcher (2007) is not exactly an open-world experience. It takes place in and around Vizima, but each chapter generally sees Geralt leave one portion of the map along with its quests to venture out to the next one.

Verily, having a real open world to play around in would be a treat to aspiring Witchers everywhere.

“A modern reimagining”: This line could mean anything at this point, but we are starting to think that we set our sights a bit low in our Witcher remake wishlist.

The Witcher remake release date

CDPR’s financial results webcast brought news that The Witcher remake will drop after we’ve already had the chance to play the first game from the new Witcher trilogy, so that could be years into the future.

CDPR’s webcast also had worrying information that the company aims to release the entire new trilogy and the remake in a six-year window which sounds a bit rushed. We’d certainly wait even longer to get fewer games as detailed and amazing as The Witcher 3. But that’s just us.

Please share your thoughts about the future of The Witcher IP in the comment section and let’s continue this conversation.
