Intro

Rockstar has been breached once more and then game people have been waiting for 13 years may get a second giant leak before it sees the light of day. It all depends on whether the hackers get the ransom they asked for.

Rockstar confirms data breach

GTA 6 developer studio confirmed the breach is real and issued a short statement.

We can confirm that a limited amount of non-material company information was accessed in connection with a third-party data breach. This incident has no impact on our organization or our players.

It would appear the way to breaching Rockstar’s data storage was through Anodot, which is an analytics service that monitors could pricing. However, it needs a lot of access to function properly so it is also a sizeable security risk for its clients.

Think of it as a Kernel-based anti-cheat. It requires a lot of access to provide service but if it gets compromised, so does your PC.

ShinyHunters, the group behind the breach, have sent a ransom letter to Rockstar and depending on whether they get satisfied or if lawyers manage to do their thing first, the leaked data may never reach the public.

Recollection of the previous big leak

Previously, GTA 6 saw a massive leak on September 18, 2022, where a lot of work-in-progress gameplay footage was released. Eventually, Rockstar tracked the leak back to a UK citizen and got him sent to jail. Due to the latter’s behavior, there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight for his sentence as he is unrepentant and keeps claiming he will do something similar if released.
