Intro

Bethesda announced the Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition, in celebration of Fallout 4 being 10 years old. One might mistake this for a good thing because it will come bundled with over 150 mini DLCs, otherwise known as mods.

What Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition brings

Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition will feature:

  • Base Fallout 4 game
  • 6 official DLC
  • 150+ “Creations”

FO4:AE arrives on November 10, 2025.

How Anniversary Edition harms the player base

Anniversary Edition’s big selling point is getting the 150+ “Creations” bundled in, which is a fancy name for otherwise paid mods. If you’re thinking something along the lines of “modders should be paid for their time and effort”, no argument here. However, Bethesda takes the lion’s share of the mod revenue and the modders get scraps.

On top of that PC is an open platform, and as such, it has enjoyed a long history of mods that come for free. Therefore, the free Creations really don’t have the same draw as they did on consoles. Modders can take donations, which means Bethesda doesn’t get to take most of their revenue.

However, all those free mods get broken whenever Bethesda updates a game. They simply stop working and require modders to update them to the current patch, which may never happen because it’s possible mod makers moved on from this 10-year-old-game. In other words, Bethesda is trying to pull the rug from under anyone with regular mods and hook them with a free sample of paid mods.

They are intentionally making the experience worse for regular players in order to try and milk them for some more cash. The only way to avoid this is to prevent Fallout 4 from updating.

How to prevent or roll back Fallout 4 updates

Keep in mind that these are unofficial tools and methods, so trying to opt out of Bethesda’s nonsense can be tricky. Read or listen to instructions carefully so your game doesn’t break.

Once again, pirates have it best because their game will not automatically update anyway.
